I think [Ferrari's] car is fundamentally not quick enough. There's been a really interesting development off track for Ferrari this week. On Thursday, the two leading Italian sport papers - La Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere della Sera - both wrote stories questioning Fred Vasseur's future as team principal. And when that happens, those papers with their gravitas - and let's not forget, Gazzetta are part of the Ferrari family - when that happens, you know something is going on.

Someone at Ferrari has said something to someone at both of those newspapers, and it led to Lewis Hamilton feeling that he had to sort of protect Fred Vasseur yesterday in the news conference. But even his answers weren't completely unequivocal, they were slightly non-denial denials, as we call them in journalism.

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has confirmed that Charles Leclerc will miss second practice after his crash in the first session.

“When I left the garage, we think we damaged the chassis and we won’t be able to do FP2 by regulations. We need to do some checks but I think it’s over today for Charles," said Vasseur at the team principals' news conference.

Ferrari say the Monegasque will be back for third practice on Saturday.

Max Verstappen was the quickest driver in the first session.

The McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were seventh and 14th but the pair were trying out new car parts.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed out early on in first practice.

Groundhogs, please stay comfortable in your spots for this session.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed in first practice at the Canadian Grand Prix as Red Bull's Max Verstappen set the pace.

Leclerc misjudged Turn Three after locking his brakes going into the corner and collected the barrier as he speared across the grass, just under halfway through the session. He was fastest at the time but ended the session 10th.

Leclerc tried to cut across the grass after locking his brakes on the entry to the difficult right-left chicane but collected a barrier and destroyed the left-hand side of his car.

"I'm sorry," Leclerc said to the team over the radio. "I locked up and should have gone straight. I thought I could make the corner but I hit the wall."

Max Verstappen ends the first hour on top for Red Bull but Ferrari have got work to do now to get Charles Leclerc back on the road for second practice following his crash earlier on.

I think with the track conditions, there's not a lot we can read in to and the true performances of teams and drivers so far. It is nice to see the Williams do well with Alex and Carlos P2 and P3, let's see if they can maintain that. A track like this should suit them. McLaren struggling a lot, not showing their true speed.

The Ferrari screeches across the Canadian asphalt as Lewis Hamilton comes in hot on his latest lap on the C6 compound. The seven-time world champion is fifth on the timesheets and just over four-tenths away from Max Verstappen's best marker.

Three drivers are putting the mediums through their paces as the clock ticks down with seconds of this session remaining.

I think it is always hard in a triple-header to get your rhythm back. It's not easy going race weekend to race weekend and if there is something Kimi [Antonelli] is struggling with, there is not a lot of time to try and remedy that. I think for him now, he has to have a mental reset and then go again. He's had a really good start to the season and he is a really impressive rookie. How you bounce back is what is more impressive and important to me.

Lando Norris reaches the hairpin of Turn 10 at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve but once again the rear of the McLaren doesn't want to play ball. The Briton has to slow down to avoid any accidents as the car goes straight on. He eventually crosses the line and moves up to seventh on the timesheets on the soft compound.

The chicanes and how the kerbs are makes it really tight. The kerb ride is something important here and it can spit you off if you get it wrong. That's the beauty of Montreal, all the exits are pretty tight, it adds a little extra jeopardy when you are chasing the throttle.

In the McLaren camp, it's been a quiet session for the upgraded cars so far. Lando Norris is sitting 12th on the timesheets, while title leader Oscar Piastri is a few places lower in 14th spot. The two drivers are out on track now, going through the C6 soft tyre like the majority of the field.

The clock says there are 13 minutes of this opening practice session in Canada remaining and apart from Charles Leclerc's shunt, it's been a relatively clean session. The odd lock-up, of course, but no more cars carrying damage.

Both Williams cars are in the top three, while Racing Bulls also have both cars in high positions. Rookie Isack Hadjar is quicker than team-mate Liam Lawson but the pair are sixth and seventh behind Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari.

I think with the traffic here, there are a lot of blind corners. I think drivers have to get well out of the way in those corners. It can lead to consequences of big incidents, maybe a bit more on it with that for some drivers.

Alex Albon puts the other Williams 0.039 seconds off the pace of Max Verstappen's Red Bull and into second on the timesheets. But Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso isn't happy with the Thai-Brit driver, questioning his movements out of Turn Two and calling it "crazy".

Race control has had a little look at the incident but decided to take no further action.

I think localising the triple-headers helps the drivers and teams. We talk about how hard it is for the drivers but the teams fly out economy everywhere, they don't get too much sleep, they're always working on the cars and it is always intensive for everyone involved.

Economically as well, it is great to see they're taking that into . I think triple-headers are fun and entertaining for fans with non-stop action but it can be gruelling.
