A potential correction to the previous post - the US Open scoring system shows Ludvig Aberg making par on the eighth hole. Was sure he took four!

Hideki Matsuyama gets a bad break from the bunker beside the eighth, hitting the flag stick with his escape from the sand and ricocheting a good way away from the hole.

He makes bogey, as does Ludvig Aberg, who is now hovering around that projected cut line.

Adam Scott's tee shot on the long par three is a peach but he has to settle for par.

A 15-footer for birdie on the sixth and he's now one shot off the lead.

Robert MacIntyre with an unlikely birdie on the par-five 12th after a bad miss left from the fairway saw him having to hack his ball out of the rough and up through the green to even more rough off the back.

Facing a tough chip just to knock it close and have a chance to save par, the Scot just sticks it in for his birdie!

Over at the fifth, Rory McIlroy's 38 foot birdie putt comes up five feet shy and it's a nerve jangler to make par.

Which he makes. He'll stay at eight over.

Vintage Phil Mickelson. A 100-yard pitch that takes a couple of bounces, spins, stops. A foot from the hole. A tap-in birdie to follow, surely, which would take him to three over for the tournament.

In what might be his final US Open, he's giving himself every chance of playing all four rounds.

Matt Fitzpatrick had made a steady start with three straight pars but that runs ends at the 13th as he can only make a four on the par three.

The former US Open champion found the left bunker off the tee but played a nice escape actually, down to about seven feet, but wasted his hard work by missing the putt.

After finding trouble off the tee, JJ Spaun is left with a 25-footer for par on the seventh. He gives it every chance, but it's not to be on this occasion.

Spaun is now in a tie for the lead with Thriston Lawrence of South Africa.

A bright start for Xander Schauffele comes to an end with a bogey on the 14th, when he left himself 35 feet after two but in the rough and his chip out could only get to 17 feet for par, which he missed to drop his first shot of the day.

Bryson DeChambeau also makes a bogey on this hole after finding himself in a similar spot after his second shot and also being unable to get down in two.

Clubhouse leader Sam Burns has been speaking after his round of 65:

"I think for this golf course you really just have to free it up. It's too hard to try to guide it around here. You're going to hit some in the rough, you're going to hit some in some bad spots - you might as well do it with authority.

"I think being able to rely on your short game and give yourself a chance at par is really important.

"There's obviously a lot of golf left on a very tough golf course, so I think really this afternoon is about just getting rest and getting ready for tomorrow."

"It's going to be a fun weekend."

The top 60 players and ties will make it through to the final two rounds at Oakmont.

If the second round was to end at this moment, an overall score of five over would get you through, but six over would mean you'll be going home.

However, with low scores scarce, don't be surprised to see six or maybe even seven over being good enough to make the cut.

A chance for Rory McIlroy to arrest at the slide at the fourth hole as he lines up from 10 feet. Nope, it's high. He'll stay at eight over par - one above the projected cut line.

Spare a thought for Shane Lowry who is disguising his undoubted frustration with a grin as his par putt lips out and trundles away.

He's at 14 over for the tournament.
